Below you will find some helpful advise on choosing your wedding music for your Ceremony and Reception. We hope to hear from you soon - Congratulations to you if you are engaged and we wish you the best that life has to offer!

Choose from a wide variety of solo musicians and groups for your Wedding Ceremony available only in the San Jose and San Francisco areas (not in Sacramento or Monterey)

When considering a professional to perform at your bay area wedding ceremony.  The first thing that you should establish is the musicians maturity level.  They should be very familiar with classical and pop tunes and be willing to provide suggestions in your initial consultation.

The musician or group should be prompt in getting back to you over the phone. Also, they should be willing to have a phone meeting or meet in person to go over the music. Proximity is important to consider. For example, if you are getting married in Santa Cruz and are looking for a String Quartet to play your wedding ceremony music, consider hiring a local group first. We can help you find the local group and save you the extra travel fee. A San Jose string quartet would charge an extra $100-$150 just to travel to Santa Cruz.

If a DJ is handling the sound system for your wedding ceremony, ask the DJ if they can provide a small PA system with a microphone stand.  Most bay area wedding DJ's will charge you a small fee for the extra lavalier microphone.  Sometimes the officiant or minister can bring a small PA system with complete with a microphone.  In any case, it is recommended to have a separate professional PA system if the wedding ceremony is outdoors or if the number of attendees exceeds 100 guests.  A Classy Affair Entertainment DJ's have professional PA systems avalable for bay area weddings.

Prelude Music

The Prelude is about 30-40 minutes of music prior to Bride walking down the aisle.  During this time guests will be seated, mothers will be escorted to their seats, the groom and his groomsmen walk out with the minister, bridesmaids, flower girl(s) and the ring bearer will also make their way down the aisle.

During this time in the ceremony we recommend classical music.  Some of the most beautiful music and melodies ever created were written by immortals like Bach, Handel, Debussy, Mozart, Pachelbel, Vivaldi, Beethoven and many other composers.

Choose from these selections for Prelude Music

"Adagio" from Sonata in E - Mozart.
"Allegro Maestoso" from Water Music - Handel.
"Air On The G String" from Orchestral Suite No. 3 - Bach.
"Allegro" from Brandenburg Concerto #4 - Bach.
"Ave Maria" - Bach.
"Claire de Lune" - Debussy.
"Canon in D" - Pachelbel.
"Fur Elise" - Beethoven .
"Greensleeves".
"Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring" - Bach.
"Moonlight Sonata" - Beethoven.
"Once Upon A Time" From The Princess Bride.
"Sheep May Safely Graze" - Bach.
"Swan Lake" - Tchaikovsky.
"Spring from The Four Seasons" - Vivaldi.
"Waltz" from Sleeping Beauty - Tchaikovsky.

Its a good idea to make a special selection for the Bridesmaids to start walking, something that can be timed during the rehearsal.  The most requested musical selection for the bridesmaids in recent years has been Pachelbel Canon in D.

Processional Music

Traditional or Contemporary

The Processional is the most important selection of music for your ceremony.  You have to decide if your a traditional Bride or a contemporary Bride.

If you choose tradition, then you'll want to consider the "Bridal Chorus" from Wagner's Lohengrin ("Here Comes The Bride").  If you are not to crazy about the "Bridal Chorus" but still like the traditional feel to weddings, perhaps you might choose the "Trumpet Voluntary."  The "Trumpet Voluntary" was made famous when millions of television viewers watched Princess Diana of Wales walk down the aisle to marry Prince Charles.

Choose from these selections for Processional Music  (traditional Bride):

"Allegro Maestoso" from Water Music - Handel.
"Arioso" - Bach.
"Blue Danube Waltz" - Strauss.
"Bridal Chorus" (Here Comes The Bride) from Lohengrin - Wagner. "Canon in D" - Pachelbel.
"Concerto in D Major" - Bach.
"Elvira Madigan Theme" - Mozart.
"Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring" - Bach.
"Romance" from Eine Kleine Nachtmusik - Mozart.
"Spring from The Four Seasons" - Vivaldi.
"Trumpet Tune in D Major" - Purcell.
"Trumpet Voluntary" (Prince of Denmark's March) - Clark.

For the contemporary Bride, think about music that fits your personality and style.  Do you enjoy New Age Piano like Jim Brickman or the beautiful and unique sound of Enya or the soft Jazz feel of Kenny G's "Forever In Love".  Do you identify with the old Standards like Louis Armstrong's "What A Wonderful World" or Etta James' "At Last" or newer songs about Love and Weddings like Shania Twain's "From This Moment."  These are perfectly great tunes to play when you walk down the aisle.

Choose from these selections for Processional Music  (contemporary Bride):

  • " Only Time" - Enya
  • "Love Me Tender" - Elvis Presley
  • "Forever in Love" - Kenny G
  • "From This Moment" - Shania Twain
  • "The Wedding Song" - Paul Stookey

Recessional Music

The Recessional is played immediately after the Bride and Groom are pronounced Husband and Wife, they kiss and are introduced as "Mr. and Mrs. John Smith".  Listen to the traditional "Wedding March" from Mendelssohn's A Midsummer Night's Dream. The contemporary Bride can select something like Shania Twain's "From This Moment" or a favorite piano melody to exit.

Choose from these selections for Recessional Music

"Air On The G String" from Orchestral Suite No. 3 - Bach.
"Allegro Maestoso" from Water Music - Handel.
"Auld Lang Syne"
"Brandenburg Concerto No. 1, Allegro - Bach
"Entrance Of The Queen Of Sheba" from Solomon - Handel
"First Movement from Brandenburg Concerto #1 in F" - Bach
"Hallelujah Chorus" from The Messiah - Handel
"Hornpipe from Water Music" - Handel
"La Rejouissance from Royal Fireworks Music" - Handel
"Ode To Joy" - Beethoven
"Spring from The Four Seasons" - Vivaldi.
"Toccata from Organ Symphony #5" - Widor
"Trumpet Tune in D" - Purcell.
"Trumpet Voluntary" (Prince of Denmark's March) - Clark.
"Wedding March" A Midsummer Night Dream - Mendelssohn.

Wedding Reception

Cocktail Hour

It's a good idea to have music playing when the first guest arrives at the reception hall. The disc jockey or musician should already be set up, dressed appropriately and playing some soft music.

You might consider having a Cocktail Hour at your reception.  The great thing about a cocktail hour is that the Bride and Groom can get away for a while without keeping their guests waiting. This is great when the Bride and Groom want to take a detour to a scenic location and take some great outdoor photos with the wedding photographer.

Consider having the DJ play some light jazz mood-setting music.  The music will definitely set the ambiance of the room. A professional DJ will play the music soft enough to encourage conversation among the guests.

If your budget allows, consider hiring live music during the Cocktail Hour.  Choose from the following available only in the San Jose and San Francisco areas (not in Sacramento or Monterey):

Bridal Party Indroduction & Grand Entrance

Once the bridal party arrives, the DJ or MC can ask that everyone go into the dining area to be seated.  Then the DJ or MC can begin to introduce the bridal party, starting with the Bride's Parents, Groom's Parents, Flower Girl, Ring Bearer, Bridesmaids and Groomsmen, Best Man and Maid of Honor, and finally the Bride and Groom.

Choose from these selections for the Bridal PartyIntroduction

  • "Sandstorm" - Darude
  • "Get Ready For This" (San Jose Shark's Theme) - 2 Unlimited
  • "2001 A Space Odyssey"- Strauss
  • "Da Da Da"(VW Commercial) - Trio
  • "Austin Powers Theme" - Austin Powers Soundtrack

Toasts

Once the Bride and Groom have been formally introduced and the champagne has been poured, it's time for the official toast to be given by the Best Man.

The toast should be creative, humorous, touching and memorable.  Most importantly, however, the Best Man should raise his glass and actually propose a toast after his speech. Many times Best Men forget to propose a toast and raise their glass. A simple nudge by the Groom to remind his pal should help move things along.

After the toast, the Best Man should give his counterpart, the Maid of Honor a chance to say a few words. We've heard how great the groom is, now it's time to indulge the lovely bride.

Dinner

After the toasting and roasting, dinner is served and the music should be non-obtrusive and kept at a comfortable volume.  The best type of music during dinner is light jazz, instrumental, soft pop, and classical.  Your guests will appreciate a variety of music and not the same Kenny G album throughout dinner.  This is a great time for the Bride and Groom to walk around and say Hello to their family and friends.

Boquet Toss

Next, the Bride should get ready to throw her Boquet.  This special anointing or passing of the baton to the next bride-to-be is a special tradition at weddings.

The DJ or MC will call up all the single ladies to the dancefloor and the bride will toss her boquet over her shoulder. Whoever ends up with it will be next to tie the knot.

If there is a shortage of single females in the room, consider having the DJ call up all the married women instead or having an anniversary dance. The anniversary dance is for all the married couples to dance a special song together and the DJ will weave his way to the longest married couple. The DJ plays the song and then announces, "If you've been married ... 5 years or less step off the dancefloor, 10 years or less, etc." Once you have the golden couple left on the dancefloor, they are presented with the boquet and garter.

Getting back to the boquet toss, pick a song to set the mood. Choose something fun and upbeat.

Garter Toss

After the Boquet Toss, the DJ or MC announces for all the bachelors to step on the dancefloor to participate in the Garter Toss.  The Bride sits on a chair in the center of the dancefloor and the Groom takes a knee.  The music should start and it should be a fun song to capture the moment as the groom clumsily takes off the garter.

General Dancing

After the Boquet Toss, Garter Toss, you should resume dancing.  Starting off with a slow song may be a good idea because people may still be eating cake and talking. During this time you should have at least 1 hour of solid dance time.

For a crowd of more than 200 you should allow at least 2 hours of solid dancing from the Garter Toss to the last dance.  The DJ or band should take requests and play music that the Bride and Groom specifically selected.
